Nam Tran

I have over 20-year experience in manufacturing operation and business management, and am competent in business planning and consulting work. With strong backgrounds in finance & accounting and manufacturing operation I was senior manager with multinational companies in Australia. I am recognised for being a committed team player and a straight shooter and always prepare going all the way to deliver good results.
Having been in Vietnam for six years in my endeavour to develop trading and business investment programs for Australian and local, I have built up a good contact networks in areas of education, construction, transportation, government, and manufacturing. And, recently I have joined the Advisory Council of Australia - Vietnam Trade Commission (Austrade of the Australian Embassy). In this capacity I will work as advisor to Austrade on development of bilateral relationship and strategies which identify commercial opportunities and challenges for Australian businesses in the Vietnamese market.
High on my business development agenda in Vietnam is “to bring Australian education to the Vietnamese public”; this explains why I have accepted the teaching offer by RMIT Interna-tional University in the first instance. I am currently teaching two “soft-skills” courses: Leadership & Management and Business Case Study (Organization Theory), and doing corporate training when ever am required.
Research capability is not the my strongest competence, therefore I’m not contemplating to become a “top” researcher at this University. By sitting on the Research Taskforce I can offer the team the following supports:
- identifying sources of funding through my local contact and overseas network;
- finding leverage opportunities with other research institutes or industrial organizations;
- strategy development;
- project management;
- organization planning;

Cheers,

Nam

Thank You

Thank you for taking the time to select the RMIT Vietnam faculty members for the Research Task Force, and for listing your suggestions for sub-committees.

Jeremy Pearce

"I think the real value in my membership would come from my diverse background which spans many of the areas that the task force is required to cover. Currently, I am completing my doctorate in law and teaching in the MBA program - including the research project. I have been published in referred journals and have a very strong background in securing sponsorship funds. I have also worked in senior management in both the private and public sectors in Australia as well as being a Vincent Fairfax Fellow from the St James Ethics centre.

Since being at RMIT Vietnam another way I have demonstrated my commitment to academic endeavour is my initiative to set up the Academic Forum that is now finishing its second semester of activity with further plans for growth next semester. I understand the requirements for achieving outcomes with a task force of this nature and my years of participating in professional sporting teams add further experience to the drive needed to make things happen at this level."

Lukas Parker

"Lukas is a lecturer and the coordinator in the MBA programs. He is currently teaching in Marketing Management and the MBA Research Project courses. He has been researching and lecturing in various capacities at Universities in both Australia and Vietnam over the last eight years.

Lukas served on the Faculty of Business and Enterprise Research Committee at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia for a period of 5 years between 2001 and 2005. In this period the faculty and university research focus was on converting the high levels of research/peer reviewed conference papers to tier 1 and 2 conference papers and book chapters. Also in this period he was involved on the university’s committee involved in the preparations for its AUQA (Australian Research Quality Agency) Audit in 2002, which had a specific focus on the university’s research output.

Lukas graduated with PhD from Swinburne University of Technology in 2005 and his research focused on consumer trust and it relevance to the Australian retail banking industry. He is an active researcher with two published peer-reviewed papers in 2007 and a strong history of publications in both peer reviewed journals and conference papers. His research focus has largely had a marketing bent, but more recently he has been involved in non-commercial published research relating to water supply and sanitation in the Mekong Delta."

Nguyen Kiem Than

I am an MBA Lecturer. Beside my Phd thesis, my involvement with research experiences were mostly within the corporate world. I provide Research to internal customers while serving as Market Research Manager, Strategic Planning and Marketing Director at Halliburton KBR in the US. I was also a Sr. Consultant at Chemical Market Research Associates (CMAI) and at the French E&C Technip Corp. I currently teach Executive MBA Research class at RMIT.

Madeleine Morris

My interests in serving on the Research Task Force are three-fold. Having been a member of the RMIT Vietnam faculty for six years, I have a deep interest in raising the academic profile of this university. I also believe that participating in research makes for inspired and engaged teachers who pass their enthusiasm for discovery on to their students. Finally, I believe that industry takes far too many of our most talented staff. I would like to help enable RMIT Vietnam to offer our staff meaningful reasons to remain in the academic field and opportunities to grow within it.

Admittedly, I have little experience in the field of academic research. I am only now finishing my own masters degree. However I am energetic, highly motivated, and well organised.

Emory Merryman III

"I hold a Masters Degree in Statistics. In order to support myself during my studies, I worked in my university's Statistical Consulting Centre. When professors referred their research students to me, I assisted them with the statistical aspects of their work. Because good research depends on the proper design and setup of experiments as well as the correct analysis and interpretation of data, the Research Task Force will need an expert in statistics.

After earning my degree in Statistics, I worked in the pharmaceutical market research industry. I statistically analysed demographic and pharmaceutical sales data to determine optimal promotion strategies. This gave me practical experience in proprietary research.

This is my first term at RMIT Vietnam. I teach Business Computing. I have been a member of the Performance Review Planning Task Force and am a member of the RMIT HIV Prevention Working Group.

I want to serve on this task force because I believe that RMIT Vietnam needs - as Professor Scown mentioned - to gradually build up its research infrastructure. Developing an environment that promotes research does not happen overnight. As we nurture our research program, our teaching will simultaneously improve. We will attract better students. RMIT's reputation will grow. This will improve conditions for everyone."

Ulas Gezgin

I would like to join the task force to contribute to the development of research in RMIT Vietnam. As the macroeconomics course coordinator in RMIT Vietnam, I have focused on the following research topics since my tenure in the university: Vietnamese economy, Vietnamese tourism, corruption in Asia, Vietnamese education system and Asian regional cooperation. I have prepared a book which is a compilation of my research articles on these issues. I can send the manuscript upon request.

For the upcoming year my research interests will be teaching economics and developing economic literacy (I plan to run a workshop on these topics), incentives and motivation, technological change, philosophy of education and educational administration.

I am open to interdisciplinary research as my degrees are in different areas (BA in educational science; MA in social/ economic psychology; PhD in cognitive sciences; and an incomplete second PhD on anthropology).

Keshav Dayalani

"Research is an important element of any knowledge institution. Institutions have the duty not only to impart knowledge but also to create new knowledge which necessitates the need for research for it to be recognized as a centre for knowledge excellence.

Research at RMIT Vietnam will have a number of positive implications including enrichment of content delivered to students, community linkages, professional development of individuals and recognition in the world of academics.

With my experience of more than four years at RMIT in academics, industry linkages and student support, I wish to extend my efforts to this new and value adding endeavor of the University. As a lecturer and as student (of MBA), I have come through some links in the academics which need to be strengthened and these have also been identified by colleagues from time to time. I strongly believe that these should be highlighted and improved for the students in future to make their learning more valuable and for the staff to make their term more rewarding in terms of skills and knowledge enhancement. In my opinion, reserach can be one big instrument of developing a cause and effect relationship and help us make our teaching more meaningful and a learning experience based on facts and grassroot realities. Being one of those colleagues who have been with RMIT for long time and have always happily participated in any activity of institution service, I wish to participate in this visionary activity of institution building. For this, I seek your support and encouragement."
